Camden County Sheriff’s Office deputies rescued a kayaker on Cumberland Island.

A kayaker has returned home safely after his family contacted the sheriff’s office and reported him four hours overdue.

The rescue occurred early Thursday morning, about 1 a.m. Lt. Wellner and Sgt. Duckworth, two officers from the Camden County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations division, responded to Cumberland Island.

The Kayaker’s family stated that he was four hours late and couldn’t be reached by cell phone.

It took several hours of searching, then deputies from the Marine Unit discovered the kayaker’s headlamp against the swamp.

According to the sheriff’s office, the kayaker was no longer able to paddle into the wind and river. He was stranded in the swamp.

“Our team was able to get the kayaker on their boat along with his kayak and get him safely back to the boat ramp in Nassau County where he launched from,” the sheriff’s office said. “We want to say a special thanks to the Georgia State Patrol Aviation team, the U.S. Coast Guard, GA DNR, and the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in the search.”

It was a happy finish to a scary situation, thanks to everyone participating in the search.
