Suspect Arrested in Cumberland Oaks Murder

ST. MARYS, GA— Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the deadly shooting at the Cumberland Oaks Apartment complex that left one man dead and another injured.

After a joint investigation with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, police have charged Domonja R. Mitchell, 17, of St. Marys, with Felony Murder and Aggravated Assault in the November 16 killing of Lancine Bakary Soumahoro, 21, also of St. Marys.

The investigation revealed evidence implicating Mitchell as the shooter. Initially reported as a victim with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the arm, Mitchell has now been identified as the individual responsible for Soumahoro’s death.

On November 19, Mitchell was taken into custody in Jacksonville, Florida, and is currently being held at the Duval County Jail. Authorities are working to extradite him to Georgia, where he will face charges.

The St. Marys Police Department expressed gratitude to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for their collaboration in resolving the case.

This arrest comes as the community continues to grieve Soumahoro’s death. His family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses.

While the arrest provides some answers, the community remains shaken by the violence. Authorities encourage anyone with additional information to contact Detective Lt. Chris Winkle at (912) 882-4488 or the Georgia Bureau of Investigation at (912) 729-6198.
